This is the biggest 12th-pass central government exam of the year, and it needs nothing beyond a Class 12 certificate. Assam candidates sit the exam at centres in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Silchar and Tezpur under SSC's North Eastern Region, so you can write it without leaving the state. The fee is Rs 100, and women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen pay nothing at all.

SSC CHSL Vacancy Details 2026

The Commission gives approximately 2,536 tentative vacancies. Final vacancies are settled later, after the Commission scrutinises the documents supplied by the user departments, and the updated post-wise and category-wise split is published under Candidate's Corner on ssc.gov.in in due course.

One point matters for anyone hoping to work close to home: the Commission does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies. There is no Assam quota in this exam and no way to know from the notice how many posts fall in the North East. The notice tells candidates to approach the concerned user departments directly for zone-wise information.

SSC CHSL Posts and Pay Scale 2026

PostPay LevelPay Scale

Posts are allotted on merit-cum-preference. Once a post is allotted, the Commission will not change it — and if you gave a high preference to a post whose physical, medical or educational standards you do not actually meet, your candidature is rejected rather than shifted elsewhere. Fill the preference order carefully.

Educational qualification

  • For most posts — LDC/JSA and DEO/DEO Grade 'A' — you must have passed 12th standard or equivalent from a recognised board or university.
  • For DEO and DEO Grade 'A' in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission itself, and the Ministry of Culture, you need 12th standard pass in the Science stream with Mathematics as a subject.

Candidates who have appeared in their 12th standard examination but not yet received results may apply, provided they hold the qualification on or before 7 October 2026. Degrees earned through open and distance learning are accepted only where recognised and approved by the Distance Education Bureau of the UGC for the relevant period.

Correction charges

The correction window is not free. SSC levies a uniform Rs 200 for correcting and re-submitting an application the first time, and Rs 500 the second time. These charges apply to every candidate regardless of gender or category — the fee exemptions above do not cover them. Corrections are paid online only, and the charge is non-refundable. Getting the form right the first time is cheaper than fixing it.

SSC CHSL Selection Process and Exam Pattern 2026

Selection runs through two computer based tiers. Tier-II includes a skill or typing test that is mandatory to qualify.

Tier-I exam pattern

PartSubjectQuestionsMarks
IEnglish Language (Basic Knowledge)2550
IIGeneral Intelligence2550
IIIQuantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill)2550
IVGeneral Awareness2550
Total100200

Duration is 60 minutes, with a sectional timer of 15 minutes per subject. Questions are objective multiple choice, set in English, Hindi and any regional language you opt for in the application form for Parts II, III and IV. Negative marking is 0.50 marks per wrong answer.

Tier-II exam pattern

Tier-II runs in two sessions on the same day. Session-I lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and covers Sections I, II and III; Session-II is the skill or typing test.

SectionSubjectQuestionsMarksTime
Section-IMathematical Abilities; Reasoning and General Intelligence601801 hour
Section-IIEnglish Language and Comprehension; General Awareness601801 hour
Section-IIIComputer Knowledge Test154515 minutes
Section-IVSkill Test / Typing TestQualifying10–15 minutes

Each question in Sections I, II and III carries 3 marks, and negative marking is 1 mark per wrong answer — twice the penalty of Tier-I. It is mandatory to qualify every section of Tier-II.

Skill test and typing test

  • DEO in the ministries at Para 8.1: data entry speed of 15,000 key depressions per hour, tested over 15 minutes.
  • DEO and DEO Grade 'A' elsewhere: data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour, tested over 15 minutes on a passage of about 2,000–2,200 key depressions.
  • LDC / JSA typing test: 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, judged on a passage typed in 10 minutes. That corresponds to roughly 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour respectively.

You choose the typing test medium — Hindi or English — in the online application form, and that choice is final. No change is entertained later, so decide before you submit.

How the merit list is made

The final merit list is prepared on the aggregate marks of Section-I and Section-II of Tier-II only, subject to qualifying Section-III and Section-IV. Tier-I marks do not count towards the final merit — they only decide who is shortlisted for Tier-II. Where scores tie, Section-I marks of Tier-II break it first, then Tier-I marks.

Exam Centres in Assam

Assam candidates come under SSC's North Eastern Region (NER), headquartered at Housefed Complex, Last Gate, Beltola-Basistha Road, Assam Sachivalaya, Dispur, Guwahati – 781006. Centres within Assam are:

How to Apply for SSC CHSL 2026

Applications are accepted online only, at ssc.gov.in. There is no offline route.

  1. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on ssc.gov.in. This is the step people miss: an OTR generated on the old website, ssc.nic.in, will not work on the new one. If your OTR is from the old site, generate a fresh one.
  2. Opt for Aadhaar-based authentication during OTR. It is worth doing — candidates who authenticate via Aadhaar will not have their application rejected over photograph or signature standards, and need not carry photographs and original photo ID to the exam venue.
  3. Once OTR is done, fill the application for this examination. An OTR stays valid for every future SSC exam on the new site.
  4. Upload your photograph and signature to the prescribed standards. Our image resizer and image compressor will bring scans to the right dimensions and file size without destroying legibility.
  5. Choose your exam centre, post preferences and typing test medium carefully — several of these cannot be changed later without paying correction charges.
  6. Pay the Rs 100 fee online if you are not exempt, then confirm it landed via the 'Payment Status' link. Print the completed form for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for SSC CHSL 2026?

Anyone who has passed 12th standard or equivalent from a recognised board and is between 18 and 27 years of age as on 1 August 2026. Some DEO posts additionally require 12th pass in the Science stream with Mathematics. Candidates awaiting their 12th results may apply if they hold the qualification by 7 October 2026.

Is there any fee for women candidates?

No. Women candidates are fully exempt, as are SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen candidates. Everyone else pays Rs 100. Note that correction charges of Rs 200 and Rs 500 apply to all candidates regardless of category or gender.

Can I write the exam in Guwahati?

Yes. Guwahati (Dispur), centre code 5105, is an SSC North Eastern Region centre, along with Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Silchar and Tezpur in Assam.

How many vacancies are there for Assam?

The notice does not say. SSC states plainly that state-wise and zone-wise vacancies are not collected by the Commission, and advises candidates to approach the concerned user departments for that information. The 2,536 figure is an all-India tentative total.

Do Tier-I marks count in the final merit list?

No. The merit list is prepared on the aggregate of Section-I and Section-II of Tier-II only, subject to qualifying Section-III and Section-IV. Tier-I only determines who is shortlisted for Tier-II.

What is the negative marking in SSC CHSL?

0.50 marks are deducted for each wrong answer in Tier-I. In Tier-II, 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer in Sections I, II and III. There is no penalty for unanswered questions.

What typing speed do I need for LDC/JSA?

35 words per minute if you opt for English, or 30 words per minute for Hindi, judged on a passage typed in 10 minutes. The medium is chosen in the application form and cannot be changed later.

My OTR is from the old SSC website. Do I need a new one?

Yes. An OTR generated on ssc.nic.in will not function on the new ssc.gov.in website. You must generate a fresh OTR there before you can apply.
