SSC JE Recruitment 2026 — 1,748 Junior Engineer Posts, Apply by 22 September

This is a diploma and degree-level engineering exam run entirely online, with vacancies spread across departments like CPWD, the Border Roads Organisation, the Military Engineer Services and several others. Assam candidates compete on the same all-India merit list — there is no separate state quota, but the pay and posting make it worth a look if you hold the right qualification.

The 1,748 posts run across several central government departments, each hiring separately under the same exam. The Commission publishes the department-wise split in the detailed notice rather than a single combined table, so treat the figure above as the total and check the notice for how many fall under your preferred department and discipline before you apply.

SSC JE Eligibility

• A diploma or a degree in the relevant engineering discipline — Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or the combined Electrical & Mechanical stream — from a recognised institution. Some posts also ask for a set number of years of relevant experience; check the post-wise requirement in the notice before applying.
• Scientific Assistant (IMD) has its own qualification line, built around physics, mathematics or a related science background rather than an engineering diploma — read that section separately if this is the post you want.
• Age limit as on 1 August 2026: up to 32 years for CPWD and Lighthouses, and up to 30 years for other departments.
• The usual category relaxation applies on top of that — 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and further relaxation for PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates as set out in the notice.

Application Fee

The fee is Rs 100, payable online at the time of applying. It is waived entirely for SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and women candidates — a wider fee exemption than most SSC exams carry, so check whether you qualify before paying.

How to Apply

1. Go to ssc.gov.in and open the SSC JE 2026 notification link on the notice board.
2. Register on the SSC Recruitment Portal if you do not already have a login — One Time Registration carries over from other SSC exams, so do not create a second account if you have applied before.
3. Log in, fill in your personal, educational and category details, and choose the discipline and department you are eligible for.
4. Upload your photograph, signature and certificates in the format and size the portal specifies.
5. Pay the application fee online, unless you fall under an exempt category.
6. Review the form carefully before final submission — SSC does not normally allow corrections after the window closes.
7. Download and save the confirmation page for your records.

Documents You Will Need

• Diploma or degree certificate and marksheets in your engineering discipline
• Category certificate — SC, ST, OBC, EWS or PwBD, if claiming reservation or fee exemption
• Passport-size photograph and signature, scanned to the portal's specifications
• Aadhaar card or another accepted photo ID
• Experience certificate, for posts that ask for it

Selection Process

SSC JE selection runs in three stages, in this order:

1. Paper I — a computer-based objective test covering general intelligence, general awareness and the technical subjects of your discipline.
2. Paper II — a longer computer-based technical paper for candidates who clear Paper I, going deeper into your engineering subject.
3. Document Verification and Medical Examination — for candidates who clear both papers, followed by the medical standards each department sets for its posts.

There is no interview in this process — the written papers and document verification decide the final list.
