CSIR NEIST Jorhat Recruitment 2026: 3 Stenographer & Assistant Posts, 10+2 Pass

This is a central government job in Assam itself, at the CSIR NEIST Jorhat campus, and the qualification is 10+2. For an HS-passed candidate in upper Assam with stenography or typing skills, this is about as accessible as a Government of India post gets — no degree required, the exam is at Class 12 standard, and the workplace is in the state.

Of the 2 Junior Stenographer posts, 1 is reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). The single Junior Secretariat Assistant post is reserved for Ex-Servicemen. The advertisement notes that the number of vacancies against each post code is provisional and may increase or decrease.

CSIR NEIST eligibility criteria

Both posts require 10+2 / XIIth or its equivalent, plus a skill:

• Junior Stenographer — proficiency in stenography as per the norms fixed by DoPT from time to time. The work is secretarial and stenographic assistance, typing, and other official work as assigned.
• Junior Secretariat Assistant (Stores & Purchase) — proficiency in computer typing speed and in using a computer, as per DoPT norms. The work is assisting the Stores & Purchase section, plus other official work as assigned.

PwBD candidates claiming relaxation must have not less than 40% disability. Widows claiming relaxation must not have remarried, and are required to produce the death certificate of the husband along with an affidavit.

The fee is payable only through State Bank Collect. The advertisement is blunt about this: a fee paid by any other mode is not accepted, and the application is rejected as invalid without a fee. The transaction or UTR number generated after payment must be entered in the online form, so pay before you start filling it. Download the SB Collect e-receipt and keep it — it is on the list of documents you will need later.

Note that women of every category are exempt, as are SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and CSIR employees. The fee is non-refundable, and an application once submitted cannot be withdrawn.

CSIR NEIST Jorhat selection process

CSIR NEIST Jorhat selects candidates through a competitive written examination plus a proficiency test. There is no interview.

Junior Stenographer

One paper, 200 questions, 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe). OMR or computer based, objective multiple choice, at Class 10+2 standard. Questions are set in both English and Hindi, except the English Language part.

0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer in all three parts.

The stenography proficiency test is one dictation of 10 minutes at 80 words per minute, in English or Hindi as opted in the application form. Transcription time is 50 minutes for English and 65 minutes for Hindi (70 and 90 minutes respectively for candidates eligible for a scribe).

The stenography test is only qualifying. The final merit list is prepared on the written examination marks alone, and includes only those who qualified the stenography test.

Junior Secretariat Assistant

Two papers, 200 questions, 2 hours 30 minutes total. Paper-I is qualifying only; Paper-II is evaluated only for candidates who clear the threshold in Paper-I, and the merit list is built on Paper-II marks.

Note the difference in penalty: Paper-I has no negative marking, so attempt everything. Paper-II deducts a full mark per wrong answer against three marks for a correct one, so guessing there is costly.

The typing proficiency test requires English typing at 35 w.p.m. or Hindi at 30 w.p.m., over 10 minutes — equivalent to 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. It is qualifying in nature.

Paper-I covers General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, Problem Solving and Situational Judgment, verbal and non-verbal. General Awareness covers current events and everyday scientific observation, with questions on India and its neighbours across sports, history, culture, geography, economics, general polity including the Constitution, and scientific research. English Language tests vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and correct usage.

How to apply for CSIR NEIST Jorhat recruitment 2026

1. Pay Rs. 500 through State Bank Collect first, if you are not in an exempt category. Route: State Bank Collect → Educational Institute → DIRECTOR NEIST → Payment Category "Application Fee" → select your post code → make payment. Download the e-receipt.
2. Go to neist.res.in and open the online application for Advertisement 05/2026-REC.
3. Read the instructions on the CSIR-NEIST career portal before filling anything.
4. Fill the form, entering the UTR or transaction number from your fee payment.
5. If your university awards CGPA, SGPA or OGPA, convert it to a percentage using your own institution's formula and enter that.
6. Submit, then take a printout of the generated application for your records.

There is no need to send a hard copy of the application. The process is entirely online.

Applying for both post codes means two separate applications, each with its own SB Collect payment receipt — one application cannot cover both. Serving employees of CSIR laboratories, government departments, autonomous bodies and PSUs must route their applications appropriately and furnish the NOC with vigilance clearance.

The advertisement asks candidates to apply in time and avoid the last-minute rush. With a 5 PM cutoff on 28 September, the final afternoon is the worst time to discover a payment has not reflected.

Is it worth applying

Three posts is a small number, and competition for a central government clerical post at 10+2 level is heavy. But the reservation splits matter here: one Stenographer post is SC, one is PwBD, and the JSA post is Ex-Servicemen only. If you fall in one of those categories, the effective field is far narrower than the headline suggests — and if you are a woman, SC, ST, PwBD or ex-serviceman, the application costs you nothing.

The stenography and typing bars are the real filter. 80 w.p.m. shorthand is not something to start learning this month. If you already have the speed, this is a rare chance at a Government of India post without leaving Assam.
