NIC Recruitment 2026 Notification

The National Informatics Centre has invited online applications for the post of Scientific/Technical Assistant-A on a direct recruitment basis, under advertisement NIC/STA/2026/2. NIC is the technology arm of the Government of India, building and running the digital infrastructure behind government services.

The distinguishing feature of this recruitment is the selection method: there is no NIC examination. Your GATE score does the work, so the competitive stage has already happened if you have sat GATE in 2024, 2025 or 2026.

Computer Science and IT carries 300 of the 376 posts — four-fifths of the advertisement. The 50 posts in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are notable as a distinct GATE paper, and worth checking if you sat that paper rather than the general CS one.

NIC Recruitment 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

M.Sc., MS, MCA, B.E. or B.Tech. in the relevant discipline. Candidates whose CGPA needs converting to a percentage must obtain a conversion certificate from the Registrar of their University.

GATE score

A valid GATE score card for 2024, 2025 or 2026. This is the core requirement — without a GATE score in one of those three years, you cannot be considered, whatever your degree.

The three-year window is generous. If you sat GATE in 2024 and did not pursue it at the time, that score is still live for this recruitment.

Age Limit

The upper age limit is 30 years for UR and EWS candidates as on 30 September 2026, with the usual relaxations for reserved categories. Candidates already serving in Government organisations get a relaxation of 5 years.

NIC Scientific Technical Assistant Salary 2026

Level 6 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix — Rs 35,400 to Rs 1,12,400 per month, plus the allowances admissible to central government employees.

Postings can be anywhere in India, and the notification states the job location as India and outside India, so an overseas posting is possible though not typical.

All women candidates are exempt from the fee, regardless of category — alongside SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

NIC Recruitment 2026 Selection Process

1. GATE score — candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their valid GATE score from 2024, 2025 or 2026.
2. Document verification — for shortlisted candidates.

That is the entire process. There is no written test, no coding round and no interview stage described in the notification. For a GATE-qualified engineer this is among the shortest routes into a central government technical post.

• Senior Secondary certificate
• Valid GATE score card for 2024, 2025 or 2026
• Essential qualification certificate
• CGPA conversion certificate from the Registrar of the University, where applicable
• Category certificate and PwBD certificate, where applicable
• Experience certificate, where applicable
• NOC, for candidates already in government service
• Age relaxation certificate, where claimed

The CGPA conversion certificate is the one most often missing. If your degree reports a CGPA rather than a percentage, request that certificate from your Registrar now rather than at verification.

1. Go to the NIC recruitment portal and open the Scientific/Technical Assistant-A advertisement.
2. Register and fill in the application, entering your GATE registration number and score exactly as on the score card.
3. Upload the required documents.
4. Pay the Rs 800 fee, unless you are exempt as an SC, ST, PwBD or woman candidate.
5. Submit before 30 September 2026.

If you hold a GATE score from 2024, 2025 or 2026 in Computer Science, Data Science and AI, or Electronics and Communication, this is worth an application on effort alone — there is no further examination to prepare for, and for women and reserved categories there is no fee either.

376 posts is a large intake for a technical cadre, and the 300 Computer Science posts make it one of the biggest government openings for CS graduates this year.

The practical constraint is the GATE score itself. Nothing in the application improves it, so the decision is simply whether your score is competitive for the discipline you are applying in. There is no downside to applying if you meet the qualification.
