The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has invited online applications for vacant posts of Gramin Dak Sevak, covering three roles: Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak.

This is the most accessible government recruitment in the country. There is no written examination, no interview, and the qualification is a Class 10 pass. For a school-leaver in rural Assam it is often the first realistic route into a government job.

Educational Qualification

A Secondary School Examination pass certificate of Class 10, with passing marks in Mathematics and English, from any recognised Board of School Education.

Both subjects must be passed — Mathematics and English are not optional here, and an otherwise strong Class 10 result without a pass in both will not qualify.

Age Limit

18 to 40 years as on the last date for submission of applications.

The Branch Postmaster role carries the higher scale, as it involves running a branch post office. ABPM and Dak Sevak roles are on the lower scale.

The fee is Rs 100. It is waived entirely for:

• All female applicants
• SC and ST applicants
• PwBD applicants
• Transwomen applicants

Between the Rs 100 fee and these exemptions, cost is effectively no barrier — which is consistent with the whole design of this recruitment.

India Post GDS Selection Process 2026

There is no written examination and no interview. Selection works like this:

1. A system-generated merit list is prepared automatically from the marks obtained in the Class 10 examination.
2. Shortlisted candidates undergo physical verification of documents.

Because the merit list is built purely from Class 10 marks, your percentage in that examination is the single thing that decides the outcome. Nothing you do during the application window changes it — which means the only thing within your control is applying accurately and on time.

Marks are computed to a set formula, and candidates with higher aggregate percentages in Class 10 rank higher. There is no scope for improving your position through preparation.

• Medical certificate issued by a medical officer of a Government Hospital, Government Dispensary or Government Primary Health Centre

Candidates being engaged in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa or Nagaland additionally need a certificate from the competent authority on knowledge of the local tribal dialect or language. This does not apply to engagements in Assam.

1. Register on the India Post GDS online engagement portal.
2. Fill in the application form with your Class 10 marks exactly as they appear on the marksheet — an error here directly affects your merit position.
3. Upload the required documents and photograph.
4. Pay the Rs 100 fee, unless you are exempt as a woman, SC, ST, PwBD or transwoman candidate.
5. Submit before 21 September 2026 and keep a copy.

India Post GDS 2026 — What Assam Candidates Should Know

GDS vacancies are allotted circle-wise, and the Assam Circle has its own set of divisions and branch offices. A GDS post is a village-level appointment — you work at the branch post office serving your own area, which is unusual among government jobs and means no relocation.

The single most important thing about this recruitment is that your Class 10 percentage is your entire application. If you passed Class 10 with good marks in Mathematics and English, apply — the odds turn on that number and nothing else. If your marks were modest, applying still costs nothing for most categories, but be realistic about the merit list.

Apply early. The portal is heavily loaded in the final days of a GDS cycle, and there is no benefit to waiting since the merit list does not depend on when you applied.
