NMMS Scholarship Details

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Central Sector scheme run by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education. It has been running since 2008. Its stated purpose is to stop meritorious students from economically weaker sections dropping out at Class VIII, and to keep them in school through the secondary stage.

Every year 1,00,000 fresh scholarships are awarded at the Class IX level, and each one continues up to Class XII if the student keeps meeting the renewal conditions. The scheme was approved for another five years covering 2021-22 to 2025-26, with the amount fixed at Rs 12,000 per student per year for that period. These figures come from the revised guidelines issued on 10 March 2022 under F. No. 1-6/2020-SS.

NMMS Scholarship Amount

The scholarship is Rs 12,000 per annum, paid at Rs 1,000 per month. It runs for a maximum of four years — Class IX, X, XI and XII — so a student who qualifies in Class VIII and renews each year receives up to Rs 48,000 in total.

Money is paid straight into the student's own bank account by Direct Benefit Transfer through SBI. Awardees are asked to open an account preferably with SBI, or with any public sector or scheduled bank that has core banking.

NMMS Scholarship Assam Quota

Assam's fixed allotment is 2,411 scholarships a year. Each state and union territory has a quota set by a formula: two-thirds weight on enrolment in Classes VII and VIII, one-third on the child population of the relevant age. Reservation within the state quota follows Assam's own norms, not a central rule.

For comparison inside the North East, Tripura has 351, Manipur 255, Meghalaya 231, Nagaland 180, Arunachal Pradesh 122, Mizoram 103 and Sikkim 58. Assam's 2,411 is by a wide margin the largest allotment in the region, which is worth knowing: the competition is against other Assam students for those 2,411 places, not against the whole country for 1,00,000.

NMMS Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Who can apply

• Studying in Class VIII as a regular student, sitting the selection test during that year.
• Enrolled in a government, government-aided or local body school.
• Scored at least 55% in the Class VII examination, relaxable by 5% for SC and ST students — so 50% for SC and ST.
• Parental income from all sources not more than Rs 3,50,000 per year. This ceiling was raised from Rs 1.50 lakh in the 2022 revision.

Who is not eligible

• Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
• Students in private schools.
• Students in residential schools run by central or state government institutions where boarding, lodging and education are provided.

Read the school-type rule carefully before applying — it is the condition that disqualifies the most applicants in practice. A student at a private school cannot receive this scholarship however high the marks.

NMMS Scholarship Exam Pattern

Each state conducts its own selection test at the Class VIII stage. The state-level examination has two papers:

The MAT tests verbal and non-verbal reasoning and critical thinking. Questions may be on analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception and hidden figures.

The SAT covers science, social studies and mathematics as taught in Classes VII and VIII. There is nothing outside the school syllabus in it, which is the useful thing to tell a student preparing: the Class VII and VIII textbooks are the syllabus.

Children with disability are given extra time, as applicable.

NMMS Scholarship Qualifying Marks

A student must pass both tests. The cut-off is on the aggregate of MAT and SAT taken together:

Clearing the cut-off is not the same as winning the scholarship. Selection is against Assam's 2,411 places, so the merit position matters. On top of the test, the student must have scored at least 55% in the Class VIII examination at the time of selection, with 5% relaxation for SC and ST students.

NMMS Scholarship How to Apply

1. Sit the state-level NMMS selection test held in Class VIII. Assam's conducting authority issues the exam notice, the form and the exam date.
2. Once the result is out and you are selected, open an account on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in.
3. Register with your details and fill in the scholarship application form.
4. Upload the documents asked for — the income certificate, the caste certificate if you are claiming relaxation, your marksheet, school details and bank passbook.
5. Have your school verify the application. It is checked by the school, then by the State Government, then sent to the Ministry for sanction of funds.
6. Submit the form before 8 November 2026 and save a copy of the submitted form.
7. Renew the application on NSP every year. A scholarship is discontinued if it is not renewed within the stipulated period.

Most applications fail on the uploads rather than on eligibility. If a scanned certificate is over the portal's size limit, use our image compressor or image resizer to bring it down. If the portal wants a PDF and you have photographs of the documents, convert the images to a PDF, and use the PDF compressor when the file is too large to upload.

NMMS Scholarship Renewal Conditions

The scholarship does not continue automatically. To keep it:

• Score a minimum of 60% in Class X to continue into the higher classes, relaxable by 5% for SC and ST students.
• Get clear promotion in the first attempt from Class IX to X, and from Class XI to XII.
• Continue as a regular student in a government, government-aided or local body school, with good conduct certified by the head of the institution.
• Renew on the National Scholarship Portal within the stipulated time each year.

A few rules are worth knowing before they catch anyone out. A student may hold only one Central Government scholarship at a time. A gap of one academic session at any point discontinues the scholarship, and once discontinued under the disbursement rules it cannot be revived. No arrears claim is entertained after 12 months of the academic session it relates to. The scheme does not fund study abroad.

NMMS Scholarship Important Dates

The selection test date and the result date are announced separately by the state's conducting authority. Start the income and caste certificates early — those take the longest to obtain and are the usual reason a student misses the closing date.

NMMS Scholarship for Assam Students

NMMS is aimed squarely at the students this site is written for: a Class VIII student in a government school whose family earns under Rs 3.5 lakh a year. Rs 1,000 a month through to Class XII covers the ordinary costs — books, fees, the bus — that are the real reason a bright student stops going to school after Class VIII.

Two practical points. First, the test is written in Class VIII and there is no second chance in a later class, so the year matters. Second, the syllabus is the Class VII and VIII textbooks, which means preparation is revision rather than fresh coaching.
