ST Scholarship Assam 2026: Pre-Matric and Post-Matric, Apply by 6 Oct

By AssamJobDesk TeamPublished on

The ST Scholarship Assam 2026 applications close on 6 October 2026, so you have days, not weeks. There are two schemes for Scheduled Tribe students of Assam, both on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP): Pre-Matric for Class IX and X, and Post-Matric for everything after Class X, from Class XI to a PhD. Both are funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and awarded by the Government of Assam. Both need a family income of ₹2.5 lakh a year or less. This post is for ST students who belong to Assam. If you are from another state but study here, apply under your home state's scheme instead.

Important Dates

The NSP lists the same schedule for both schemes. Applications opened on 6 July 2026 and close on 6 October. Your school or college must verify your application by 6 November, and district and state checks run until 15 December. An application your institute has not verified cannot move to the next stage, so tell your school or college office the day you submit.

ST Scholarship Assam Eligibility

Both schemes:

  • You belong to a Scheduled Tribe recognised in Assam, and Assam is your home (domicile) state.
  • Your family's income from all sources is ₹2,50,000 a year or less. If both parents earn, their incomes are added. A brother's or sister's income is not counted. For an orphan supported by a guardian, there is no income limit.
  • You have a bank account in your own name in a scheduled bank, linked to your Aadhaar and mobile number.
  • You are not getting any other scholarship.

A self-declaration of income is not accepted. You need an income certificate from the competent authority, issued in the year of admission. For a salaried parent, it uses the previous financial year's income.

Pre-Matric only: you study in Class IX or X at a government school or one recognised by the government or a central or state board. You get the scholarship once per class, so if you repeat a class, you don't get it a second time for that class.

Post-Matric only: you have passed Class X or a higher exam, and your course is at a recognised institution. That means a government college or university, an Institution of National Importance, a UGC-recognised university or college, a deemed university, or a private university with NAAC or NBA 'A' grade. Private professional colleges affiliated to a recognised university, recognised higher secondary schools, recognised diploma institutes, NCVT-affiliated ITIs, and AICTE or medical-council approved institutions also count. If you are at one of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs' listed "top class" institutes, you apply under the National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students instead, which is also on the NSP. You also cannot switch streams and keep the scholarship. For example, you can't take it for a B.Com after a B.A.

ST Scholarship Assam Amount

Post-Matric has two parts. The first is your compulsory, non-refundable course fee, fixed by Assam's fee fixation committee. For private institutes, the central share is capped at ₹2.5 lakh a year for engineering, ₹6 lakh for MBBS, MS or MD, and ₹1 lakh for other courses. The second part is a monthly stipend:

IINon-professional degrees such as BA, BSc, BCom, MA, MSc, MCom₹8,200₹5,300

The same applies to students cured of leprosy and students with sickle cell anaemia or thalassaemia, with a certificate. A Post-Matric award runs for your whole course, renewed each year you pass. If you fail a year, it stops until you clear that class.

Documents You Need

How to Apply on the National Scholarship Portal

  1. Get your One Time Registration (OTR) number on scholarships.gov.in or through the NSP OTR app on the Play Store. The OTR is a 14-digit number based on your Aadhaar, and it lasts your whole student career. Face authentication fails if your Aadhaar biometrics are locked, so unlock them first.
  2. Log in with your OTR and fill in the application. Choose the scheme marked "Assam": Pre Matric Scholarship to ST Students (Class IX and X) or Post Matric Scholarship to ST Students.
  3. Check the form before you submit. Once you submit, you cannot edit it, and your Aadhaar details cannot be corrected at any stage.
  4. Submit by 6 October 2026, then ask your institute to verify it before 6 November.

If you don't have internet or a debit card, NSP services are available at Common Service Centres. If you got the scholarship last year, apply as a renewal, not as a fresh applicant; NSP rejects a renewal student's fresh application.
