ITBP Head Constable Recruitment 2026: 37 Posts, Apply by 27 Oct

By AssamJobDesk TeamPublished on

The ITBP Head Constable Recruitment 2026 covers 37 posts across two separate notices from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force: 21 for Head Constable (Motor Mechanic) and 16 for Head Constable (Education and Stress Counsellor). Applications are online only, from 28 September to 11:59 pm on 27 October 2026. The Mechanic post is for men with 10+2 and a motor mechanic certificate plus three years of workshop experience, or a three-year automobile engineering diploma. The Counsellor post is for men and women with a degree that includes psychology, or a B.Ed. Some sites list this as "ITBP Constable", but both posts are Head Constable, not Constable (GD). If you are looking for a general duty constable job, this one is not for you.

ITBP Head Constable Vacancy 2026

Both posts are Group C, non-gazetted, temporary but likely to become permanent. You can be posted anywhere in India or abroad. ITBP says the vacancy numbers are tentative and may change, and any change will appear on its recruitment portal.

In each post, 10% of the vacancies are kept for ex-servicemen. The Mechanic post has no ST vacancy at all, and the Counsellor post has none for SC.

ITBP Head Constable Salary

Both posts are at Level 4 of the pay matrix, ₹25,500 to ₹81,100 a month under the 7th Pay Commission. On top of basic pay you get dearness allowance, ration money, free accommodation or HRA, transport allowance, leave travel concession and free medical care. A special compensatory allowance is added when you are posted in notified border areas. You choose between the National Pension System (NPS) and the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) when you join.

Before you apply, know the service bond. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force asks you to serve at least 10 years. If you resign earlier, you repay three months' pay and allowances or the cost of your training, whichever is higher.

Eligibility and Qualification

Head Constable (Motor Mechanic): 10+2 from a recognised board, and either a motor mechanic certificate from a recognised institute or ITI with three years of practical experience in a reputed workshop, or a three-year diploma in automobile engineering. Only men can apply.

Head Constable (Education & Stress Counsellor): a degree from a recognised university with psychology as a subject, or a degree with a B.Ed. or Bachelor of Teaching. Men and women can apply.

Both notices are open to Indian citizens and to subjects of Nepal and Bhutan. Persons with disabilities are not eligible for either post. If you work for a central or state government, a PSU or an autonomous body, you will need a No Objection Certificate from your employer at document verification.

ITBP Head Constable Age Limit

Age is counted on 27 October 2026, the closing date. The two posts have different lower limits:

  • Motor Mechanic: 18 to 25 years. You must be born between 28 October 2001 and 27 October 2008.
  • Education & Stress Counsellor: 20 to 25 years. You must be born between 28 October 2001 and 27 October 2006.

SC and ST candidates get 5 extra years and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates get 3. Ex-servicemen get 3 years after their military service is deducted from their age, rising to 6 years for OBC and 8 years for SC or ST ex-servicemen. The Counsellor notice gives departmental candidates 5 years. The Mechanic notice instead lets central government servants apply up to age 40 (UR), 43 (OBC) or 45 (SC/ST). Your date of birth is taken from your matriculation certificate, and ITBP will not change it later. Check your exact age on the closing date with our age calculator.

Your category certificate must be in your hands by 27 October and must be in the format annexed to the notice. The OBC non-creamy layer certificate has to cover income for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26. In Assam, our guides explain how to get a caste certificate and an EWS certificate. Start now, because a certificate issued after the closing date will not count.

Physical Standards for Assam Candidates

The two notices group the states differently, so check the row for your post.

Eyesight must be 6/6 and 6/9 without glasses or lenses, and colour blindness rules you out. Knock-knees, flat feet, varicose veins and squint also disqualify you. Tattoos are allowed only on the inner left forearm or the back of the hand, and must be smaller than a quarter of that part.

ITBP Head Constable Recruitment 2026: Selection Process and Exam Pattern

Both posts start with a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test. For men, that is a 1.6 km run in 7 minutes 30 seconds, an 11-foot long jump and a 3½-foot high jump, with three chances at each jump. For women (Counsellor only), it is an 800 m run in 4 minutes 45 seconds, a 9-foot long jump and a 3-foot high jump. Ex-servicemen skip the PET. The Physical Standard Test follows straight after.

Counsellor: a written exam of 100 objective questions for 100 marks in two hours, with no negative marking. It has General English (10), General Hindi (10), General Awareness (10), quantitative aptitude and simple reasoning (10) and Psychology (60). The psychology section covers general psychology, intelligence and creativity, personality and group dynamics, psychopathology, counselling psychology and managing human resources. The merit list comes from the written marks. Document verification and the medical exam follow.

Mechanic: documents are checked before the written exam. The exam has 100 questions at 12th standard over two hours: General Knowledge (10), Mathematics (10), Hindi or English (20) and trade theory (60). Ten times the vacancies in each category then sit a 50-mark practical skill test covering vehicle inspection, fault finding, repairing defects and handling tools. You need 50% to pass the skill test, but merit is still drawn from the written marks.

The written pass mark in both is 35% for UR, EWS and ex-servicemen, and 33% for SC, ST and OBC. The test may be on OMR sheets or on a computer, at ITBP's choice. Admit cards are issued online only.

One thing to know before you plan around this: ITBP's own notice board still says the written exams for its 2024 Head Constable (Motor Mechanic) and Head Constable (Education & Stress Counsellor) recruitments are "under active consideration". Recruitment in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force can take a long time.

Application Fee

Men in the UR, OBC and EWS categories pay ₹100, online only, and the fee is not refunded. For the Counsellor post, SC, ST, women and ex-servicemen pay nothing. The Mechanic notice exempts SC and ex-servicemen.

How to Apply Online for ITBP Head Constable

  1. Go to the ITBP recruitment portal and register with a mobile number and email you will keep. Admit cards go only to these.
  2. Fill in your profile, including category, gender and employment status. ITBP will not correct these later, and a wrong entry cancels your candidature.
  3. Choose the post, upload your photo and documents, and pay the fee if it applies to you. Our passport photo tool makes a photo in the right shape. Keep copies of the same photo, because you must bring it to every stage.
  4. Submit before 11:59 pm on 27 October 2026 and print the form. You will not be allowed into the PET venue without that printout and your admit card.

Apply only on recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. The notice says no one needs to pay anything beyond the fee, so if someone asks you for money, report them to the recruitment board or the police. Our list of official recruitment websites helps you check a link before you enter your details.
