By AssamJobDesk TeamPublished on

The TISS Guwahati Recruitment 2026 covers 3 faculty posts at the Guwahati off-campus of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences: 1 Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences and 2 Assistant Professors, one in the Centre for Under Graduate Studies and one in the School of Social Work. They come under TISS's national teaching advertisement, Advt. Ref. No. TISS/TEACHING/2026/01, and you apply online by 3 November 2026. These posts are for postgraduates with 55% who have cleared NET, SET or SLET or hold a PhD, and, for the Associate Professor post, eight years of teaching or research. If you only have a bachelor's degree, this one is not for you.

TISS Guwahati Vacancy 2026

The full advertisement has 9 faculty posts across the Hyderabad, Tuljapur and Guwahati off-campuses. Guwahati has three of them:

PostSchool or centreCategoryPay level
Associate ProfessorSchool of Social SciencesOBC (backlog)Academic Level 13A
Assistant ProfessorCentre for Under Graduate StudiesURAcademic Level 10
Assistant ProfessorSchool of Social WorkURAcademic Level 10

Pay follows the 7th Pay Commission academic pay matrix under UGC Regulations 2018. The notice gives only the levels. On that matrix, Level 10 starts at ₹57,700 and Level 13A at ₹1,31,400 a month in basic pay, before allowances. The OBC post is a backlog vacancy, which means it is reserved for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates only.

Several job sites link a PDF named "TERI_Project_Advertisement" as the notice for these posts. It is not. That file is a December 2024 advertisement for a Research Associate and a Research Assistant on a TERI-UNDP project, and it closed long ago. The faculty notice is the TISS teaching advertisement on the institute's careers page. The link is in Important Links below. TISS now runs its website on tiss.ac.in.

TISS Guwahati Eligibility and Qualification

Associate Professor, School of Social Sciences (OBC): a PhD and a master's with at least 55% in Economics, Geography, Environmental Science or Studies, Political Science, Development Studies or a related subject. You also need at least eight years of teaching or research at Assistant Professor level, seven publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals, and a research score of 75 under Appendix II, Table 2 of the UGC Regulations 2018. TISS would prefer specialists in social policy, tribal studies, environment, disaster management, natural resource management or public policy, with research on Northeast India. Being able to teach quantitative research methods also helps.

Assistant Professor, Centre for Under Graduate Studies (UR): a master's with at least 55% in Political Science, Sociology, Psychology or a related subject. You also need NET, SET or SLET, or a PhD under the UGC 2009, 2016 or 2019 regulations, which exempts you from NET. A PhD in one of those subjects, or in Economics, and work on public policy, tribal studies or impact evaluation are preferred.

Assistant Professor, School of Social Work (UR): a master's in Social Work with at least 55%, plus NET, SET or SLET or a qualifying PhD. A PhD in Social Work or the social sciences is preferred, along with specialisation in community organisation, women-centred social work, Dalit and tribal studies, gender or counselling. Experience supervising fieldwork also counts.

For the two Assistant Professor posts, a PhD exempts you from NET only if it was awarded in regular mode, examined by at least two external examiners and defended in an open viva. You must also have published two papers from it, at least one in a refereed journal, and presented two papers at UGC, ICSSR or CSIR-supported conferences. A PhD from a university ranked in the world top 500 by QS, THE or ARWU also qualifies. You must be an Indian citizen. Eligibility is judged on 3 November 2026.

Application Fee

  • UR: ₹2,000
  • OBC, EWS and women: ₹1,500
  • SC and ST: ₹1,000
  • Persons with benchmark disabilities: ₹500

The fee is not refunded, and an application with a short payment is rejected. You need a separate application, and a separate fee, for each post. If you are SC, ST, OBC or PwBD and apply for an unreserved post, you get no relaxation.

Selection Process

A screening committee shortlists candidates by academic score: Appendix II, Table 3A of the UGC Regulations for universities and Table 3B for colleges. It may set the bar higher than the minimum if many people apply. The shortlisting guidelines will be posted on the TISS careers page. Selection itself rests only on the interview. Call letters go by email to shortlisted candidates only, and TISS pays no travel allowance. If you work for a government body, a PSU or a university, bring a vigilance clearance and a No Objection Certificate to the interview. Without them you are treated as a fresh candidate.
