Assam Government Holiday List 2026 (Full List with Dates)

The complete Assam government holiday list for 2026 from the General Administration Department: every general holiday with its date and day, the half holiday, the negotiable instruments (bank) holidays, restricted holidays, second and fourth Saturday rule, and what it means for a job application or a visit to a government office.

It tells you which days the Offices under the Government of Assam and every Revenue and Magisterial Court in the state are shut, which days the banks stop clearing cheques, and which days you can take off as a personal choice. How the Assam holiday list is put together

The 2026 notification has a few distinct parts, and it helps to know which one you are reading:

  • General holidays — 35 days when state government offices and courts are closed for everyone. These are the "gazetted" holidays.
  • Half holiday — one day (Lakshmi Puja) when offices close at 1 P.M. instead of staying open the full day.
  • Negotiable Instruments Act holidays — the subset of days on which nationalised banks in Assam do no public business, declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
  • Restricted holidays — a list of 39 festival days from which each employee may pick two to take off. These are optional, not automatic.
  • Saturdays — the second and fourth Saturday of every month are holidays; the first, third and any fifth Saturday are full working days.

Two more things the notification makes clear: District Commissioners may declare one local holiday of local significance (two for Kamrup Metropolitan, with the Chief Minister's approval), and the holidays do not apply automatically to schools, medical colleges or engineering colleges unless those institutions adopt the list.

A few of these fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so the working-day loss is smaller than the count of 35 suggests. The long stretches to plan around are Bohag Bihu in mid-April (14–16 April, with 18 April close behind) and the Durga Puja to Diwali run in October and early November.

Assam bank holidays 2026 (Negotiable Instruments Act)

Not every government holiday is a bank holiday. The notification separately lists the days on which nationalised banks in Assam do no public business, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. If you are depositing an application fee by challan, waiting on a demand draft, or expecting a refund, these are the dates that stop the clock.

There is one more bank-only date: on 1 April 2026 (Wednesday) there is no public transaction in nationalised banks because of the annual closing of bank accounts. Plan any end-of-March fee payment to clear well before then.

Restricted holidays in Assam for 2026

A restricted holiday, sometimes called an optional holiday, is not a day off for everyone. Each state government employee may take two days from the list below in the whole of 2026. You apply for it in advance like casual leave. The list is long because Assam is home to many communities and the government leaves the choice of which festivals to observe to the individual.

The Saturday rule

Assam government offices follow a five-and-a-half-day pattern for Saturdays. The second and fourth Saturday of every month are holidays. Every other Saturday — the first, the third, and the fifth where a month has one — is a full working day. If you are planning a visit to a district office or a treasury, check which Saturday of the month it is before you travel.

District and special provisions

  • Ali Aye Ligang (18 February 2026) is a full holiday in eleven districts — Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Majuli, Charaideo and Biswanath — and a restricted holiday everywhere else.
  • Local holidays. Each District Commissioner may declare one day of local significance as a holiday (Kamrup Metropolitan gets two, approved by the Chief Minister). These are not in the state list, so ask your local office.
  • Additional holidays. The General Administration Department may declare up to two more holidays during the year with the Chief Minister's approval.
  • Schools and colleges. This list does not apply automatically to educational institutions or medical and engineering colleges; they follow their own academic calendars.
  • Date changes. The notification says that if a festival does not fall on the date notified, a correction will be issued later. Always check for an amendment before relying on a religious-festival date.

Why this matters if you are applying for a government job

Recruitment in Assam runs on official timelines, and the holiday list quietly shapes them:

  • Fee payments. If a notice asks you to pay the application fee by treasury challan or bank draft, a run of bank holidays around Bihu or Puja can eat several days. Pay early, and never leave it to the last date. The blank treasury challan form is on our downloads page.

  • Exam and interview dates. Boards usually avoid major holidays, but admit cards and result notices are often released just before or just after a long break.
